My exclusive author interview with Sandra Jones, author of Hard to Love- enjoy!
Tell us a little about yourself...I was a stay-at-home mom for 18 years. I met my husband was I was 20 years old and we have been together ever since. My son is a freshman in college and my daughter will graduate high school next year. It wasn’t until my kids were grown, where I was able to find the time to write. Not only have I just finished writing my first book, but I also went back to work part-time working with special needs children. I love to cook, travel and spend time with my family and friends.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer? Honestly, I can’t tell you the exact moment. I knew I had a story in my head that I wanted to get out. Once I finished, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to move forward with it. I had never done anything like that before. The thought of putting myself out there was terrifying. It was my husband who convinced me to move forward. I knew I would regret it if I didn’t.
Can you share your journey to becoming a published author? My first book won’t be released until May 3rd. I’m afraid I don’t have much of a journey to share. I can say this, writing the story was only half the work. I had no idea on what to do with the manuscript once I was finished. I did a lot of research online, reached out to a lot of people in the industry and made as many connections as I could. The self-publishing movement has created an amazing community filled with a lot of experienced, authors, editors, and creative designers. I wouldn’t be here right now if not for all these beautiful, gifted and talented people. I was blown away by their generosity.
What do you find to be the biggest challenge, as an author? Making a name for myself. Self-publishing is a tough business. In order to be successful, you have to be disciplined, you have to make sacrifices, but most importantly, you have to develop a thick skin. In order to promote your work, you need to take risks and do what ever it takes, because it isn’t easy.
What do you find most rewarding, as an author? The amount of flexibility and control I have are probably the most rewarding so far. I can‘t wait for my book to get published, so I can start interacting with my readers. I can only imagine how rewarding that will be.
Share with us a daily habit of yours, that helps you reach your goals. I’ve decided to treat my career as a “profession” instead of a hobby. In order to do that, I needed to develop a routine. I try to get everything done around the house first thing in the morning. I can’t write if there are a lot of distractions going on around me. Which means, I write when my kids are at school or away.
What is one piece of advice you would share with an aspiring author? You are in complete control of your career. You will make mistakes and you will doubt yourself, but you have to do what’s right for you.
Finish these sentences:
I am most grateful for...My children.
If I could give my 18 year-old self one piece of advice it would be...Go to college and get the degree.
My favorite thing about being a writer is...Bringing my characters to life.
My least favorite thing about being a writer is…I worry about being judged.
My goals for the future are...I want to make a living out of my writing, so I can retire on the beach.
I love living a creative life because...It allows me to feel things more deeply and make the most out of my time.
The last book I read was...Take me Back by Meghan March.
My favorite book, ever, is...Fifty Shades of Grey.
Outside of writing, my favorite hobby is...Traveling.
The most important thing to do if you want to achieve your goals is...Stay focused.
Do you have any New Years Resolutions for 2017? Yes, to lose weight.
Tell us about your books (genre, where we can find them, etc.) My first book Hard To Love is a contemporary romance novel. It will be released on Amazon on May 3rd. I’m currently working on my second book Hard To Stay that will hopefully be out this fall.
