I recently enjoyed an author interview with the wonderful Bluette Matthey. And of course, it's always a bonus when I connect with another writer who likes cats! My interview with Bluette, below...
Tell us a little about yourself...
I was raised on a farm in Ohio and my closest friends were (and still are) cats…aside from my husband and three sons. We moved to Le Locle, Switzerland last year, in the Jura Mountains, to the small watch-making town where my maternal grandmother was born. Living here puts me in the center of the European regions I write about. We come from a family of watchmakers and story-tellers. I never tire of traveling and exploring, and love to experience a locale by walking its streets and/or trails.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I started writing in third grade … the most awful Westerns … and my teacher would ask me to read the stories aloud to the class.
Can you share your journey to becoming a published author?
It is a journey that spans decades. Poetry while I was at university, several children’s stories, unfinished novels … Three and a half years ago I was visiting my son, who was doing an internship in London. I had taken a London Walks, which paused in front of Hercule Poirot’s London home, Whitehaven Mansions, and I thought, ‘I can do that; I can write mysteries.’ So, I started writing travel mysteries set in less-known European locales, in alphabetical order: Abruzzo Intrigue; Black Forest Reckoning; Corsican Justice; Dalmatian Traffick; Engadine Aerie.
What do you find to be the biggest challenge, as an author?
Getting the balance just right so that it all fits together like a perfectly matched puzzle, and keeping it fresh.
What do you find most rewarding, as an author?
I do lots of research into the history, culture, and cuisines of the areas I write about and really enjoy learning new things.
Share with us a daily habit of yours, that helps you reach your goals.
I am thankful for my good health and the many blessings in my life.
What is one piece of advice you would share with an aspiring author?
Never take rejection personally; think very long-term.
I am most grateful for... a supportive family.
If I could give my 18 year-old self one piece of advice it would be... don’t lose who you are; if you’re not sure, find out
My favorite thing about being a writer is... it enables me to travel and create.
My least favorite thing about being a writer is... having to deal with all the side issues that interrupt my writing.
My goals for the future are...’F’ through ‘Z’ as I continue to write my way through the alphabet.
I love living a creative life because... it is deeply satisfying and keeps me excited about everything.
The last book I read was... Death of a Fool by Ngaio Marsh.
My favorite book, ever, is... the Bible.
Outside of writing, my favorite hobby is...traveling; exploring.
The most important thing to do if you want to achieve your goals is...stay positive.
Do you have any New Years Resolutions for 2017?
I avoid New Year’s resolutions. (I avoid New Years.)
Tell us about your books (genre, where we can find them, etc.)
I tell people I write travel mysteries, then wonder if there is such a genre. My books are available at online retail sites, the usual suspects, and through my publisher, VirtualBookWorm.
