The Obstacle is the Way, by Ryan Holiday is an excellent book! Over the past year I've had several friends read and recommend the book to me. I love self-improvement books and added it to my "to-read" list, but found that it kept getting pushed down the ranks as more books are always being added to my reading list for the book blog. After listening to one of my favorite podcasts (Brute Strength) and hearing the book mentioned once more, I moved the book up on my reading list and finally made time to enjoy it- and I'm glad I did!
As the title reflects, The Obstacle is the Way delves into how we can turn our obstacles into our successes. Furthermore, we can learn that the obstacle itself actually is the way we need to go. We've all heard the advice: the only way to overcome something is to go through it. It's true. Don't run from the obstacle, don't walk away and give up. Face the obstacle. Be creative. Be innovative. Be dedicated. And when we are brave enough to actually face the obstacle that sits before us, we will experience the reward.
When I love a book, I find myself highlighting, A LOT. I've highlighted countless sentences and stories in The Obstacle is the Way. I'll share a few of my favorites with you (just a few! I highly recommend reading the book to find your own highlights, too.) below.
Holiday speaks a lot about perception. He writes: "...when you can break apart something, or look at it from some new angle, it loses its power over you." I read this line several times and agree. How true it is! And when something loses its power over you, the size of the obstacle, in many cases, is reduced.
Finding ways to pull ourselves into the present moment can help us with the obstacles we face, too (again, perspective!). And we can pull ourselves into the present moment through several methods-- for example, intense exercise (my favorite option!), meditation, unplugging from technology, spending time in nature, spending time with a dog, etc. And putting ourselves in the present moment can be much more effective to our overall well-being rather than avoiding our obstacle by going out to "party. Or treat ourselves. Or sleep in. Or wait. It feels better to ignore or pretend. But you know deep down that that isn't going to truly make it any better. You've got to act. And you've got to start now." Holiday explains. Those are just distractions. And "When it comes to our actions, disorder and distraction are death."
I rated The Obstacle is the Way 5-stars. I highly recommend this book. It's not just for entrepreneurs, athletes, coaches, parents...it's for everyone. We all have goals. We all aspire to find the meaning in life. We all face obstacles and setbacks. Don't just add this book to your "to read" list- grab a copy today and get started. You'll be glad you did!
