Book Review: The Bestseller Code: Anatomy of the Blockbuster Novel, by Jodie Archer & Matthew L. Jockers
The Bestseller Code: Anatomy of the Blockbuster Novel, written by Jodie Archer and Matthew L. Jockers is a book writers may find useful. The book shares its theory on why Fifty Shades of Grey sold so well and what makes bestsellers, bestsellers. Archer and Jockers dive into current trends in fiction novels as well as a look into how analytics have already transformed the worlds of finance, medicine and and sports...and now, maybe writing too? Statistics are cited from a five-year study of twenty thousand novels.
If you're a writer and your interested in knowing exactly what draws readers into a story (and keeps them there) and how successful writing works, this book is worth a read. I rated the book 4-stars. It is full of interesting information and presented in an easy to digest format. However, it's important to note that in reality, there is no "one-size fits all formula" to writing a bestselling novel. There are bits and pieces of information that can certainly be extracted from the data presented throughout the book, however, ultimately it is up to you- the writer- to create a compelling, interesting story that readers want to spend time with.
