Buy The Mating Game: Amazon I recently enjoyed an exclusive author interview with Dr. Lyndon McGill, author of The Mating Game: What Every Woman Should Know. Dr. McGill's official author bio shares: "Since 1976, Dr. Lyndon McGill has helped over 10,000 men and women improve their emotional and physical health through unique and innovative approaches to life and love. He is the founder of The Mating Game Seminars, based on the tenets outlined in his book, The Mating Game: What Every Woman Should Know, and he has been interviewed on more than 60 radio and television shows around the country." My interview with Dr. McGill, below - enjoy! Tell us a little about yourself: I grew up on a peppermint farm near Salem, Oregon and had several injuries that were treated very successfully by a chiropractor. Experiencing such dramatic results, I decided to become a chiropractor myself and, now, I'm happy to report that I have been in practice for over 40 years. I love my work. It's very rewarding helping people in poor health, or experiencing a lot of pain, get better through natural methods. When did you know you wanted to be a writer? I went through a very traumatic divorce back in the 1980s that left me physically sick and emotionally and financially drained. Vowing to avoid that kind of experience again, I embarked upon a quest to find out what goes wrong in relationships and what can be done to keep them healthy. I joined several support groups, took college classes in psychology and human behavior, and attended every seminar and workshop on relationships that I could get to. However, the more I learned, the more frustrated I became. I realized that while our knowledge about love and relationships is at an all-time high, our success rate in these two vital areas is still dismally low. Nearly half of all first marriages and two-thirds of second marriages ultimately fail. Especially distressing is the fact that the divorce rate among marriage counselors and psychotherapists is no less than that of the general public! Although there is some helpful information available that offers a variety of problem-solving solutions for some couples, much of the advice being peddled is ineffective and countless relationships continue to suffer. So, I decided to dig deeper and find out what truly destroys relationships. My research led me to the discovery that there are four basic urges (the 4 "F"s) that motivate human behavior and ultimately determine the success or failure of a male-female relationship. I began sharing my discovery with the members of a couple of the support groups I belonged to and the psychologists facilitating the groups told me that my discovery was ground-breaking and that I should write a book about it. I laughed initially, but finally, after much encouragement from those experiencing dramatic transformations in their relationships after implementing my theories, I spent the next seven years writing, rewriting, and finally getting my book published. What do you find to be the biggest challenge, as an author? Marketing. Unless you are an established, well-known author, you have to spend a lot of time and energy finding ways to get your book reviewed and talked about. Many marketing options for new authors are very expensive and the return on investment is often very low. So a budding author must find economical and creative ways to get the word out about their book(s) to ultimately establish an audience for their work. What do you find most rewarding, as an author? Knowing that what I have to say is helpful and can transform lives and relationships. I've come to realize that the power of the written word is extraordinary and can influence the course of humanity. Share with us a daily habit of yours, that helps you reach your goals. Reading! If you want to be a good writer and develop your unique voice, you have to be an avid reader. What is one piece of advice you would share with an aspiring author? Write about your passion and not what you think others will want to read. There's no passion in conformity. So be different, maybe even contrary at times. Stir the pot! Finish these sentences: I am most grateful for... a great family, a great relationship, and good health. If I could give my 18 year-old self one piece of advice it would be... Take the road less traveled. It will make all the difference. :) My favorite thing about being a writer is... I am my own boss and can work my own schedule. My least favorite thing about being a writer is... marketing...again. My goals for the future are... to find more issues I'm passionate about then offer unique perspectives that are transformative. I love living a creative life because... taking the road well-traveled is not my cup of tea. The last book I read was... Be Awesome: How to Live Your Best Life by Stacey Ritz. :) My favorite book, ever, is... The Mating Game: What Every Woman Should Know by Dr. Lyndon McGill (shameless self-promotion). :) Outside of writing, my favorite hobby is... Fishing. It teaches me patience and gives me time to mull over new writing ideas. The most important thing to do if you want to achieve your goals is... persist. Anything worth achieving is made sweeter by the amount of effort involved. A few more questions... Do you have any New Years Resolutions for 2017? To complete two screenplays that I'm working on. I've written half a dozen scripts thus far and all have either won or were finalists in various screenplay contests. So that's encouraged me to keep writing in that medium. Tell us about your books (genre, where we can find them, etc.). My only published book thus far is The Mating Game: What Every Woman Should Know (psychology/self-help). It's available from Amazon. Where can readers find you (i.e. website, social media, etc.)? www.lyndonmcgill.com and on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/matinggame Anything else you'd like to add... Good P.L.U.C.K. (Planned Labor Under Correct Knowledge)!
