Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline delves into the the dynamic relationship between teenager Molly and Vivian, a ninety year old woman who on the surface has nothing in common with Molly. As the story unfolds, you realize that everyone has a story to tell, even those residing in large mansions on the outskirts of town. An unlikely pairing, Molly and Vivian are drawn to each other and the connection formed is deeper than ever expected.
Prior to reading Orphan Train, I was unaware an Orphan Train really existed. After reading, I researched Orphan Trains and found their historical presence fascinating. The train ride description of the orphans within the book was well-written and heartbreaking. What captivated me the most was what happened after the train ride. Once arriving at their set location, the children were paraded and showcased as though they were farm animals set to be sold. Without giving away too much of the story, I can say that although this was a fiction novel, I do believe there are many truths as to how orphans were treated in the early 1900's. I highly recommend this read and am happy to rate it 5 stars.
What Others are Saying
"Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding out who we are."
"This book gives insight into the idea that trust can so easily be shattered in people through harsh experiences, and that it takes special people to break through the walls that others put up to protect themselves."
"It is impossible to read this story and not take away from it the knowledge that wonderfully unexpected moments can happen in a life, even in one that is full of turbulence, pain, loss, and the sense of being an outsider."
