Buy the book: Amazon | Kobo Carol Dweck's book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success is an interesting read. It's a great book for those interested in bettering themselves in any aspect of life (e.g., parenting, coaching, athletics, school, business/careers, relationships). The book explores the difference between a fixed vs. a growth mindset. We can have either type of mindset at any given time. Just because we have a growth mindset in our relationship, doesn't mean we have the same type of mindset with our career, for example. In addition, just as in eating healthy isn't a one-time-and-done deal, the same is true for mindset. A healthy growth mindset is one that takes constant awareness and work to cultivate. What's the difference between a growth vs. a fixed mindset? Put briefly, a fixed mindset is when you believe your abilities are carved in stone (that you can't get better at something). Whereas a growth mindset is thinking that your intelligence, personality, etc. can be developed and improved with work. Dr. Dweck writes: "...my research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life." I most enjoyed the sections Dweck wrote on athletics (noting many specific pro athletes and their stories) and relationships. The mindset we tap into in any endeavor greatly alters outcomes. It's similar to the old adage, Whether you think you can or can't....either way, you're right. The book can serve as a helpful tool for those looking to take a fresh perspective on life. I rated the book 4-stars. It is well written and interesting, however, the stories she mention are all very short and concise and I would have liked to have had more depth in those areas.
