Better Than New: Lessons I've Learned from Saving Old Homes (and How They Saved Me), by HGTV host Nicole Curtis is an interesting read. I read the hardback of this book (often I read eBooks and listen to audiobooks) and I was really glad to have the hardcopy because of the photographs included throughout the book. Admittedly, I watched Seasons 1-8 of Curtis's DIY Network and HGTV hit show, Rehab Addict - prior to reading her book. This made the book even better as when I was reading, I knew which houses she was referring to. The book is beautifully done and well-written. I could practically hear Nicole saying each sentence as I read the book. The book is filled with Nicole's private struggles, inspiring lessons and her work and personal victories and successes. Nicole shares with readers what she's learned along her life's journey (so far) - and her stories are presented in a way that we can all learn from them.
If you don't already know how Nicole Curtis is - she's a Restoration Expert who has worked for the past twenty years to beautifully restore historic homes that often, otherwise would be destroyed. Through her restoration work, she's been known to inspire further renovations - helping abandoned and neglected neighborhoods grow and flourish once again.
Curtis is self-taught and full of energy and passion for her restoration work. Personally, I'm always inspired when finding people who love their work!
If you enjoy the show, Rehab Addict, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Nicole's book, Better Than New: Lessons I've Learned from Saving Old Homes (and How They Saved Me). The book is part memoir, part self-help in genre. I loved how the book detailed several specific houses Curtis rehabbed and mirrored each restoration with her personal ups and downs (and lessons learned) in life. If you haven't seen the show (you can purchase episodes on Amazon!), I recommend it - and I also recommend the book. Or, if you just like old house renovations - you may also enjoy the book.
