I will preface this review of Acne: Just Another Four Letter Word by saying I have never dealt with severe acne, whether as an adolescent nor adult. That being said, I was initially skeptical of the approach presented by the author. Can we really change our mindset and in turn, free ourselves of the excruciating and psychological tortures brought about by acne? Without much knowledge on the topic, I assumed treatment for Acne was purely medicinal. Take a pill, wash your face, and wait for the acne to go away. However, I wanted to approach Dr. Patel's book with an open mind, ridding myself of my preconceived notions of acne treatment.
I loved the book Mindset by Carol Dweck. I bring this up because I believe as we alter our mindset, we alter our life. But can this also work with physical issues, not just psychological issues? After reading Acne: Just Another Four Letter Word, the mind-body connection is more evident than ever. Dr. Patel discusses our mentality toward Acne and how altering our psychological approach toward how we view acne is just as important as medicinal treatments. Not only does Dr. Patel discuss how we cope with acne psychologically, but she offers strategies and techniques to help alleviate the negative emotions connected with acne. Much like the aforementioned Mindset, changing our mindset changes our outcome. If you are struggling with acne or have a loved one struggling, Acne: Just Another Four Letter Word is a must read as a holistic approach to acne treatment.
What Others are Saying
"This is a fantastic book. Sometimes acne seems resistant to everything we try against it, whether external or internal. Dr. Patel noticed that the only thing her patients who beat acne had in common was a mental shift: towards getting to know who they are and what they want in life, towards standing up to acne and anyone else in their lives who was pushing them around (even subtly) and trying to get them to be a certain way, rather than themselves. "
"Thank you Aarti for such a great guide for reclaiming your life! I have struggled with adult acne for a few years and I always find that approaching it from diet, exercise, topical treatments, etc work great up to a point, but there is a psychological and emotional element to acne that is, for me, always at the root. This book will help you address that."
